Exactly on the day of her engagement, the jeweler's daughter Yvette Bruneaux is struck by misfortune:  her mother Lou, who left the family long before to live with the crook Morone, is forced by her gangster husband to extort 20,000 Francs from her daughter.  Yvette promises to get the money by that evening, but that's too long for Morone.  He forces his way into her father's house and steals a necklace, which Yvette's groom gave to her as an engagement present.  Because of this theft, a fight breaks out between Morone and Lou, who knows that the necklace is an old family heirloom.  A short time later, Lou is found dead in her room by the hotel's owner.  Suspicion immediately falls on Morone.  But he already left the hotel when the innkeeper heard Lou's death cry.

Ausgerechnet am Tag ihrer Verlobung bricht das Unglück über die Juwelierstochter Yvette Bruneaux herein: Ihre Mutter Lou, die einst die Familie verließ und seit geraumner Zeit mit dem Ganoven Morone zusammenlebt, wird von ihrem neuen Mann gezwungen, 20.000 Francs von ihrer Tochter zu erpressen. Yvette verspricht, das Geld bis zum Abend zu besorgen, doch das ist Morone zu spät. Er dringt in das Haus ihres Vaters ein und stiehlt ein Collier, das Yvettes Bräutigam ihr zur Verlobung schenken wollte.  Wegen dieses Diebstahls kommt es zum Streit zwischen Morone und Lou, die weiß, dass es sich bei dem Collier um ein altes Familienstück handelt. Wenig später findet die Hotelwirtin Lou tot in ihrem Zimmer auf – sofort fällt der Verdacht auf Morone. Doch der hatte das Hotel bereits verlassen, als die Wirtin Lous Todesschrei hörte.
