Giovanni, der Inhaber einer kleinen Werft am Gardasee, steht kurz vor der Insolvenz. Mit seiner Ehefrau Teresa, die sich immer einen (erfolg-)reichen Mann gewünscht hat, kommt es zunehmend zum Streit, und auch seine Kinder Pauletta und Carlino bekommen den Ärger des Vaters zu spüren. Vor allem Giovannis Bruder Enzo, der inzwischen ein reicher Hotelier geworden ist, zeigt Teresa, zu was es Giovanni hätte bringen können. Dennoch weist sie Enzos erfolgreichen Geschäftspartner Beppo ab, der in sie verliebt ist. Giovanni geht zu Enzo, um ihn um einen Kredit zu bitten. Der lehnt die Bitte ab, ist er doch von Giovannis Geschäft nicht überzeugt und hat ihm bereits mehrfach mit Geld geholfen.  

Giovannia, the owner of a small ship on the Gardasee, is on the verge of insolvency.  He and his wife Teresa, who always wanted a rich and successful husband, start to argue, and even the children Pauletta and Carlino feel their father’s anger.  Above all, Giovanni’s brother Enzo, who in the meantime has become a rich hotelier, shows Teresa, what Giovanni could have become.  Nevertheless, she dismisses Enzo’s successful business partner Beppo, who is in love with her.  Giovanni goes to Enzo to ask him for credit.  Enzo turns him down:  he is not convinced of the success of Giovanni’s venture and has already helped him a number of times with money.
