The film is set in the bohemian Parisian niveau. A brutal and unscrupulous clown loves the beautiful Chinese dancer Mah and aggressively pursues her. When the clown brings about the death of her manager, he manages to direct suspicion for his murder on the dancer who rejected him. She runs from the mob and finds refuge with a Russian painter, Kusmin, who lives and works in an atelier. Mah ends up modeling for him and falls in love with the painter who took her off the street. Eventually, Kusmin gives her a check to cash at the bank, after selling a painting of her to a baron (who also admires her on first sight). But after cashing the check, the clown follows her to Kusmin's studio and steals the cash.

Der Film spielt in der Pariser Bohème. Der brutale und skrupellose Clown Coco liebt die schöne chinesische Tänzerin Mah und stellt ihr nach. Als Coco einen Akrobaten tötet, lenkt er den Verdacht auf Mah; diese findet Zuflucht bei dem in einem Dachatelier lebenden russischen Maler Kusmin und wird sein Modell. Als sie bei der Bank einen Scheck für Kusmin einlösen soll, folgt Coco ihr, und als sie sich weigert, mit ihm zu gehen, nimmt er ihr das Geld ab.
