Dobrý voják Švejk :

Faithful to the letter if not quite the spirit of the oft-adapted Great Czech Novel, this mid-'50s double-feature version lacks the vulgarity and satiric pungency of its source -- hardly surprising given the time and place of its making -- but under the circumstances it makes a decent fist of Jaroslav Hašek's rollicking anti-war picaresque.   That's largely down to Rudolf Hrušínský, probably the best-loved Czech actor of his generation, who with his moon face and beguiling eyes was born to play Hašek's discursive, deceptively imbecilic World War I doughboy. Ploughing his bumbling furrow to the front, the Švejk of director Karel Steklý and screenwriter Jan Halek is more plodding everyman survivor than Hašek's cunning "idiot," the book's savage absurdity gentled into impish bemusement. But the actors bring off the novel's farcical set pieces with brio, especially Švejk's delirious service with the irreverent Chaplain Katz (a wonderful comic turn by Miloš Kopecký) and his "interrogation" by a preening provincial police chief.   The films' look, at least, is delightfully true to the original, reproducing Josef Lada's peerless Švejk illustrations down to the publican's brushy mustachios and fanciful pipe. And every now and then a hint of Hašek's unregenerate anti-authoritarianism pokes through, as when Švejk comforts a miserable dog he's just nicked from an officer: "Don't be so cross, you silly ass. If you think about it, every soldier has been stolen from his home too."  IN CZECH WITH HARD-ENCODED, ENGLISH SUBTITLES.  (89 minutes long.  Very good quality).

Hotel Modrá hvezda: 

Put out in German occupied Czechoslovakia, this film has the unique distinction of having credits shown in both German and Czech at the same time!  This comedy about the guests of the Hotel Blue Star will leave you very entertained, even if it was put out during a brutal occupation by the Germans.  IN CZECH WITH HARD ENCODED, ENGLISH SUBTITLES.  (105 minutes long.  Very good quality).

Kinematografií se už od dob němého filmu táhne pestrá nit pokusů o více či měně věrné adaptace tohoto Haškova slavného románu. Mezi nejznámější patří bezesporu Lamačův film z roku 1926 s Karlem Nollem v roli Švejka, Fričova adaptace se Sašou Rašilovem, natočená na počátku třicátých let či zdařilá animovaná verze Jiřího Trnky. V roce 1957 natočil dvoudílnou a dodnes neznámější adaptaci režisér Karel Steklý. Její první část (Dobrý voják Švejk) zpracovává první díl románu a vy se tedy můžete setkat Josefem Švejkem, pražským obchodníkem se psy a sledovat jeho osudy od chvíle, kdy je po sarajevském atentátu zatčen, vyšetřován a po čase přes diagnózu notorického blba povolán do armády. Dostává se do vězení, odkud je vyreklamován feldkurátem Katzem, jako jeho osobní sluha a když ten jej po čase prohraje v kartách, stává se neštěstím nadporučíka Lukáše.

Mladá dívka Zuzana (Nataša Gollová) se stává dědičkou hotelu Modrá hvězda. Po úvodním omylu s luxusním hotelem téhož jména se dostane do správného hotelu. Tím je zchátralý hotel na kraji města. Bydlí v něm tři neplatící nájemníci, jinak nikdo. Zuzana začne s úpravami hotelu, aby se stal opět prosperujícím podnikem. Prvním hostem se stává průmyslník Vladimír Rychta (Oldřich Nový). Ten zde chce strávit líbánky se svoji snoubenkou Miladou (Adina Mandlová). Ta však odmítne a Rychta se zamiluje do Zuzany. Film končí happy endem.
