La película consiste en cuatro historias cortas sobre el sufrimiento de los habitantes de Cuba durante la dictadura de Batista y sus reacciones, variando del asombro pasivo a la marcha de la guerrilla. Entre las historias, una narradora (representando “la voz de Cuba”) dice cosas tales como "Soy Cuba, la Cuba de los casinos, pero también de la gente".  La primera historia muestra las masas cubanas indigentes puestas en contraste con el esplendor en los casinos para estadounidenses y la prostitución en La Habana. La historia siguiente narra la quema de un campo de caña de azúcar cuando el campesino descubre que va a perder su tierra en favor de la United Fruit Company. La tercera historia describe la represión de estudiantes rebeldes en la Universidad de La Habana (que ofrece uno de los planos más largos de la cámara). La parte final muestra a granjeros que ayudan a los rebeldes en la Sierra Maestra, conduciendo en última instancia a la marcha triunfal en La Habana para proclamar el triunfo de la Revolución. 

The film consists of four short stories about the suffering of the people of Cuba during the Batista dictatorship and the reaction of the island's populace, ranging from passive acceptance to active resistance by the revolutionary guerrillas.  Between the stories, the film's narrator says such things as, "I am Cube; the Cuba of the casinos; but also the Cuba of the people."  The first story shows the contrast between the destitute Cuban masses and the splendor of the island's casinos for vacationing Americans and the prostitutes they frequent in Havana.  The second story shows the burning of a sugar cane field when a farmer discovers he's going to lose his land to the United Fruit Company.  The third story deals with the repression of rebellious students at the University of Havana (covered in long detail by the camera); and the final story shows the farmers, who are helping the rebels in the Sierra Maestra, which, in the end, results in the triumphal march to Havana to proclaim the revolution.
