BEFREIUNG  (LIBERATION):

Fünfteiliger Monumentalfilm, der den Verlauf des Zweiten Weltkriegs mit Konzentration auf den sowjetischen Befreiungskampf vom Sommer 1943 bis zum Mai 1945 schildert. Beginnend mit der Panzerschlacht am Kursker Bogen und endend mit der Eroberung Berlins und dem Ende der Naziführung mischt das Epos schwarzweiße und farbige Szenen, kammerspielartige Einblicke in die Generalstabsplanungen von Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Roosevelt und Churchill und aufwändige Massenszenen über die Kampfhandlungen. Eingestreut sind auch historische Aufnahmen. Wichtige Generäle, insbesondere Marschall Zhukov, aber auch einfache russische Soldaten werden porträtiert und durch die Kämpfe begleitet. Mit Kosten von umgerechnet 40 Millionen Dollar war die Koproduktion zwischen der sowjetischen Mosfilm und der DEFA das teuerste Filmprojekt seiner Zeit. 

THE ultimate war film about the "victorious" phase of the war for the Soviet Union and their allies, "Osvobozhdeniye" ("Liberation") covers the events from the great tank battle at Kursk in July 1943 until the War's end in the streets of Berlin.  Filmed in the former USSR, it is a stunning and comprehensive view of the war on the Eastern Front as seen by the Soviets and, obvious ideological slant aside, is an incredible piece of work starring some of the most well known and impressive actors from the Warsaw Pact countries. This epic is divided into six parts and covers not only the battles on the Eastern Front, but the events in the occupied Eastern European countries and the meetings between the Big Three. For anyone with an interest in the subject, this is a set you won't want to miss.  A very enlightening insight into how our "allies" viewed the war in the East and their contribution to ending it.
