"Tabu" erzählt die unglückliche Liebesgeschichte zwischen dem jungen Matahi und seiner Freundin Reri. Diese ist zur Priesterin bestimmt und damit für alle Männer tabu. Da es für die Beziehung auf ihrer Heimatinsel Bora-Bora keine Zukunft gibt, fliehen sie auf eine andere Insel, auf der schon die westliche Zivilisation Einzug gehalten hat. Nun im mannigfaltigen System der Abhängigkeiten der Zivilisation lebend, muss sich Matahi als Perlentaucher verdingen, um das gemeinsame Überleben zu sichern. Doch ihre Vergangenheit holt sie schneller ein als erhofft.  Eine erneute Flucht scheitert, da das Paar nicht über ausreichende finanzielle Mittel verfügt. 

In his final film, F.W. Murnau tells the story of two lovers on Bora Bora, whose relationship is threatened, when an old warrior decrees that the girl is to become a priestess and, thus, becomes "taboo" for any man to look at, let alone have a physical relationship.  Refusing to bow to a decree which will separate them, the two flee to another island, which has become decadent and westernized.  The boy works as a pearl diver to support the two, but, not quite understanding how money works, soon falls into debt.  When the old warrior succeeds in tracking them down, they decide to flee once again.  This time, however, they don't have the financial resources necessary to carry out the plan.
