State's attorney Trevor does his duty on a small island, to which he was transferred for disciplinary reasons and who wants very badly to return to London. His daughter is involved in a secret love affair with the writer Jack Winslow, who likewise would like to leave the island to further his career. The schooner "Betty Bonn" is towed into the harbor by the "Frisco". The crew of the "Frisco" reports that they found the other ship wandering around the ocean without a crew and they're demanding a large finder's fee for the vessel. Trevor, however, suspects a crime has taken place and Winsloe discovers that the captain of the "Frisco" knew Betty Bonn, after whom the ship was named. The writer and the prosecutor's daughter attempt to find out what really happened to the "Betty Bonn".

Auf einer kleinen Insel tut Staatsanwalt Trevor seinen Dienst, der hierhin strafversetzt wurde und gerne zurück nach London möchte. Seine Tochter ist heimlich mit dem Schriftsteller Jack Winsloe liiert, der ebenfalls die Insel verlassen möchte, um seine Karriere voranzutreiben. Da wird von der Brigg "Frisco" der Schoner "Betty Bonn" in den Hafen geschleppt. Die Besatzung der "Frisco" gibt an, das andere Schiff unbemannt im Meer treibend gefunden zu haben und verlangt Bergelohn. Trevor vermutet jedoch ein Verbrechen, und Winsloe findet heraus, dass der Kapitän der "Frisco" Betty Bonn kannte, die Frau, nach der das Schiff benannt wurde. Der Schriftsteller und die Tochter des Staatsanwalts versuchen herauszufinden, was wirklich auf der "Betty Bonn" geschah.
