Dritte Verfilmung des Romans von Thea von Harbou, diesmal unter der Regie ihres Ehemannes, Fritz Lang, dem Drehbuchautor der ersten Verfilmung: Der deutsche Architekt Harald Berger kommt ins indische Fürstentum Eschnapur, um für den Maharadscha Chandra Schulen und Krankenhäuser zu bauen. Er verliebt sich in die schöne Tänzerin Seetha, die jedoch auch Chandra zu seiner Frau machen will. Damit weckt Harald die rasende Eifersucht des Maharadschas. Chandras intriganter Bruder Ramigani hat ebenfalls ein großes Interesse daran, Chandra und Seetha zusammenbringen: Er will die Hochzeit für einen Staatsstreich nutzen.

The third filming of the novel by Thea von Harbou, this time directed by her husband, Fritz Lang, the screenwriter for the first film:  The German architect Harald Berger comes to the Indian principality of Bengal to build schools and hospitals for the Maharaja Chandra.  He falls in love with the beautiful dancer Seetha, whom Chandra wishes to make his wife.  Thus, Harald awakens the mad jealousy of the Maharaja.  Chandra’s intriguing brother Ramigani has an even greater interest in bringing Chandra and Seetha together:  He wants to use the marriage as a cover for a coup d’etat.
