Russland Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts: Aufgrund antisemitischer Anfeindungen verlässt die junge Jüdin Hanne-Liebe Segal ihr Heimatdorf und reist zu ihrem Bruder Jakow nach St. Petersburg. Da er zum Christentum konvertiert ist, kann Jakow als Anwalt praktizieren. In der Stadt trifft Hanne-Liebe einen alten Freund wieder, den Studenten Sascha, der mit einer revolutionären Gruppe sympathisiert. Zu dieser gehört auch der Demagoge Rylowitsch, der als Wandermönch antisemitische Hetze betreibt. In Hanne-Liebes Heimatdorf löst Rylowitsch einen Pogrom gegen die jüdische Bevölkerung aus. Als Hanne-Liebe und Jakow zu ihrer sterbenden Mutter heimkehren, geraten sie in die gewaltsamen Ausschreitungen.

Russia in the beginning of the Twentieth Century:  Because of anti-Semitic hostility, the young Jewess Hanne-Liebe Segal leaves her home village and travels to her brother Yakov in St. Petersburg.  Since he’s converted to Christianity, Yakov is able to practice as a lawyer there.  In St. Petersburg, Hanne-Liebe runs into an old friend again, the student Sasha, who has ties to a revolutionary group.  The demagogue Rylovitsch also belongs to this group and he’s been busy as a wandering monk inciting anti-Semitic hate among those who’ll listen to him.  In Hanne-Liebe’s home village, Rylovitsch instigates a pogrom against the Jews.  When Hanne-Liebe and Yakov return home to their dying mother, they end up getting in the middle of this pogrom.
