After marrying the wealthy landowner Andrei Posdnyshev, the celebrated pianist Yalaina gave up her artistic career. From that point on, her life was to be devoted solely to her family. On her birthday, she plays Beethoven’s “Kreutzer Sonate” together with her husband’s cousin, the famous violinist Gregor Tuchachevsky. This formidable combination leaves the party guests spellbound; only Andrei seems physically pained by the music. He views both Gregor and music as competition for the love of his wife. Full of rage, he unceremoniously throws Gregor out of the house and the party comes to an unfortunate end. Yalaina is horrified and can’t understand her husband’s behavior. He recognizes his stupidity and begs her forgiveness. He suggests to her, that she take a trip alone to Germany. During this trip, Yelaina meets Gregor again, who have fallen violently in love with her.

Nach ihrer Heirat mit dem vermögenden Gutsbesitzer Andrej Posdnyschew gab die gefeierte Pianistin Jelaina ihre Künstlerkarriere auf. Fortan sollte ihr Leben ganz der Familie gewidmet sein. An ihrem Geburtstag spielt sie gemeinsam mit dem Vetter ihres Mannes, dem bekannten Geiger Gregor Tuchatschwesky, Beethovens "Kreutzersonate". Das formidable Zusammenspiel zieht alle Gäste in Bann, nur Andrej empfindet geradezu körperliche Schmerzen bei der Musik. Er sieht in Gregor und in der Musik Konkurrenten um die Liebe seiner Frau. Schließlich weist er voller Zorn Gregor aus seinem Haus, die Feier nimmt ein unglückliches Ende. Jelaina ist entsetzt, versteht ihren Mann nicht. Der sieht seine Dummheit ein, bittet sie um Verzeihung und schlägt ihr sogar vor, alleine eine Reise nach Deutschland zu unternehmen. Während dieser Reise trifft Jelaina Gregor wieder, der sich heftig in sie verliebt.
