In einem Dorf des Erzgebirges lebt um die Jahrhundertwende der Schnitzergeselle Fritz. Der Mittelpunkt seines Lebens ist Kater Lampe. Doch die Katze macht sich im Dorf unbeliebt, und endlich hat der Gemeindevorsteher Ermscher, der Lampe nicht leiden kann, die Gelegenheit, sie in polizeilichen Gewahrsam zu nehmen. Da wird die junge reiche Amerikanerin Lotte Hempel auf den talentierten Holzschnitzer aufmerksam, der auch Schneeschuhe herstellt, die Vorläufer der heutigen Skier. Als er auch noch eine Prämie für seine Arbeit erhält, gründet er eine Arbeitsgemeinschaft für die Fabrikation von Schneeschuhen, um die Ausbeutung der Heimarbeiter durch einen reichen Fabrikanten zu verhindern. Schnell verbündet sich Lotte mit ihm, denn der Ausbeuter ist kein anderer als ihr Onkel, dem auch sie das Handwerk legen will.  

The journeyman Fritz lives in a village in the Erzgebirge at the turn of the 19^th into the 20^th Century.  The focus of his life is the cat “Lampe”.  But the cat has made itself unwelcome in the town and finally, community leader Ermscher, who can’t stand Lampe, sees the opportunity to take the animal into police custody.  The young and rich American, Lotte Hempel, notices the talented woodcutter, who has made a sort of snow shoe, which is the forerunner of today’s skis.  When he receives a large bonus for his work, he creates a joint venture for the making of snowshoes to prevent the exploitation of the homeworkers by a rich manufacturer.  Lotte quickly allies herself to him, for the exploiter is no other than her uncle, whom she is determined to stop.
