Dorothea Angermann, the daughter of a respected pastor in a rural community, has been accused of murdering her husband. The events leading up to the alleged murder is shown in flashbacks during the trial: Since the time Pastor Angermann's wife left him for another man, the holy man has been withdrawn and unhappy. Because he's determined to ensure his daughter doesn't share the same fate, he's raised her in a strict household. But when Dortothea leaves the isolation of her home to take a cooking class in a nearby city, she comes into contact with other young girls full of curiosity about life. All of them have it bad for the cook Mario. And he's got most of his students wrapped around his finger. Now, it's Dorothea's turn. She waits until he makes his move. But Mario has found another victim instead. Depressed, Dorothea walks through the city and seeks escape in one of its hotels. It's there that she gets to know the engineer Michael Sever, who notices her sadness and tries to comfort her. When a telegram arrives summoning him somewhere else, he promises Dorothea that he'll get back to her. And he does; several weeks later, he shows up at the pastor's home. It's then he asks Dorothea to be his wife. Dorothea, however, says no and he leaves.

Dorothea Angermann, die Tochter eines angesehenen Pastors einer ländlichen Gemeinde, ist wegen Mord an ihrem Ehemann angeklagt. Während des Prozesses wird das Geschehen in Rückblenden erzählt: Seit Pastor Angermanns Frau ihr Glück bei einem anderen Mann gesucht hat, ist der Mann verhärmt und unglücklich. Weil er vermeiden will, dass seiner einzigen Tochter einmal das gleiche Schicksal widerfahre, hat er sie in strenger Zucht und Ordnung erzogen. Als Dorothea in der Kreisstadt an einem Kochkurs teilnimmt, kommt sie mit lauter jungen Mädchen zusammen, die voller Lebensneugier sind. Alle schwärmen für den Koch Mario. Der hat schon die meisten seiner Schülerinnen um den Finger gewickelt. Jetzt wäre eigentlich Dorothea an der Reihe. Die wartet auch darauf, dass er sich ihr zuwendet. Weil er aber ein anderes Opfer gefunden hat, läuft Dorothea traurig durch die Stadt und sucht Zuflucht in einem Hotel. Dort lernt sie den Ingenieur Michael Sever kennen, der ihr ihre Bedrückung ansieht und sich rührend um sie kümmert. Als er telegrafisch abberufen wird, verspricht er Dorothea, er werde sich wieder bei ihr melden. Etliche Wochen später steht Sever vor der Tür des Pfarrhauses. Er bittet Dorothea, seine Frau zu werden; sie aber gibt ihm einen Korb. Enttäuscht verlässt Sever das Haus.
