Wealthy Lord Curtain is bumped off by his nephew, Archie Moore, who is assisted by the butler, Edwards. At the site of the murder, Inspector Wesby finds the apparent calling card of the "Magician". He, however, is in Australia! The "Magician" and his wife, Cora Ann, and their Butler Finch, travel to London to clear up the matter and to clear his name of the crime, which is being tried in court and which he is being accused of in absentia. The "Magician" provides a clue to his capabilities by first taking the place of the judge on the bench and playing a recording from a hidden location, which proves the case against him is ridiculous. Meanwhile, a further murder takes place in the Curtain house and this time, Lady Curtain is the victim. Shortly thereafter, Archie Moore is also found dead. Inspector Wesby, who previously thought Arthur Milton was the villian, is not convinced of his innocence and convinces Sir John to work with the "Magician" to find the responsible man.

Der vermögende Lord Curtain wird von seinem Neffen Archie Moore unter Beihilfe des Butlers Edwards umgebracht. Am Tatort findet Inspektor Wesby eine vermeintliche Visitenkarte des „Hexers“. Dieser befindet sich jedoch wieder in Australien. Er reist mit seiner Frau Cora-Ann und Butler Finch nach London, um den Fall aufzuklären und sich vom Mordverdacht zu befreien, denn es wurde eine Gerichtsverhandlung mit ihm als Angeklagten in Abwesenheit angesetzt. Einen ersten Eindruck seiner Fähigkeiten hinterlässt der „Hexer“, als er die Stelle eines beisitzenden Richters einnimmt und ein Tonbandgerät aus einem Versteck am Tatort abspielen lässt, mit dem die Täter eine falsche Spur legen wollten. Im Hause Curtain geschieht ein weiterer Mord, dem Lady Curtain zum Opfer fällt. Kurz darauf wird Archie Moore tot aufgefunden. Inspektor Wesby, vormals auf der Jagd nach Arthur Milton, ist von dessen Unschuld überzeugt und legt Sir John eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem „Hexer“ nahe.
