Die Rotterdamer Reederei Hendrik Haas muss auf die Schnelle eine Million Gulden auftreiben. Soviel nämlich muss Haas der Tochter eines Investors auszahlen, sobald sie heiratet, so besagt es der Vertrag. Und nun ist genau dies passiert. Sein Neffe Paul hat aber eine glänzende Idee: Die Million, auch wenn es sie gar nicht gibt, soll in einer Geldkassette verstaut werden, und diese Kassette wird dann gestohlen. Während Paul die Verfolger des vermeintlichen Diebes in die Irre führt, hätte Haas genug Zeit, die Summe tatsächlich zusammenzukriegen.

Hendrik Hass, a Rotterdam shipper, has to come up with a million Gulden fast. That's how much Hass has to pay the daughter of an investor once she marries according to a contract previously drawn up.
