Constantine Melnik, a leader of Macedonian irredentism in Bulgaria and a reigning Prince of Pirim, rebels against the Treaty of Neuilly of 1919, which forces Bulgaria to cede Macedonia. Soldiers then storm Castle Prokop, where he and his followers are residing, and take him and the inhabitants prisoner. Constantine’s steward Stephan, who was playing with the Prince’s children when the assault began, is taken prisoner, too. He represents the prince’s children as his own. Because the prince refuses to die a soldier’s death, young Lieutenant Kosta Vasilev decides to execute him and his companions. It turns out, that Prince Melnik had executed Kosta’s brother several years earlier.
