For the rich and unscrupulous consul Karsten Bernick is only one thing important in his life: his son Olaf, who is supposed to take over his father’s shipyard one day. Johann Tonnessen, who left his homeland twenty years earlier, when Bernick married his sister, has now returned as a rich farmer. Back then, there were a lot of bad rumors about him, which Bernick never contradicted; and Tonnessen now senses, that his return has once more brought unrest to the city. A conversation between the two men doesn’t bring any peace and Bernick continues to stay silent. The secret concerns Dina, who lives in the consul’s home as an illegitimate child. Bernick now accuses Tonnessen of being the child’s father.
