Doch Marias Arzt und Freund Dr. Walitzky offenbart ihm ein schreckliches Geheimnis: Maria hat wegen einer Lungenkrankheit nur noch kurze Zeit zu leben. Zufällig hört die Betroffene das Gespräch mit an und erfährt so von ihrem Schicksal. Um Maupassant zu schonen, gibt sie vor, ihn nicht mehr zu lieben.

At the end of the 19th Century, the young Russian Maria lives in Paris and wants to become a painter. Master Bassieux instructs her and asks her to marry him, which she turns down. While walking through the city looking for subjects to pain, she meets the author Guy de Maupassant, with whom she falls in love. Bassieux is enraged and seeks revenge. Maria's doctor and friend, Dr. Walitzky reveals a horrible secret to him: Maria has tuberculosis and not very long to live. By chance, Maria overhears the conversation and so learns of her fate. To spare Maupassant, she asserts that she no longer loves him.
