Zlarin is a small fishing village on the Dalmatian coast. Each resident has to work hard, for the formerly good prices for coral have fallen through the floor. Vukovic, who has led the fishing community for many years, decides to pass an important post to his son Marko one day. Marko is a flying officer heart and soul; but he understands the importance of the post and is very much concerned about the welfare of the town's residents. Mate, on the other hand, is an able fisherman, who is engaged to Vukovic's foster daughter Anka. He had hoped to gain that post one day and he is disappointed about Marko's appointment. Marko is much loved by the fishermen, though the jealous Mate tries to turn them against the inexperienced boy.

Zlarin ist ein kleiner Fischerort an der dalmatischen Küste. Jeder Bewohner muss hart arbeiten, denn die ehemals guten Korallenpreise sind ins Bodenlose gefallen. Vukowitsch, der die Fanggemeinschaft viele Jahre geleitet hat, beschließt eines Tages, dieses wichtige Amt an seinen Sohn Marko weiterzugeben. Marko ist zwar mit Leib und Seele Fliegeroffizier, doch er weiß um die Wichtigkeit des Postens und ist außerdem besorgt um das Wohl der Bewohner seines Geburtsortes. Mate hingegen, ein tüchtiger Fischer, der mit Vukowitschs Pflegetochter Anka verlobt ist, hat gehofft, den Posten eines Tages übernehmen zu dürfen, und ist enttäuscht über Markos Ernennung. Zunächst ist Marko sehr beliebt bei den Fischern, obwohl der eifersüchtige Mate alles versucht, um die Männer gegen den unerfahrenen Jungen aufzuwiegeln.
