On the eve of the Russian Revolution, a performance of “Tosca” is taking place at the opera.  The leading roles are being played by Marina Marta and Rene Areno, who are in love with one another.  In the break between acts, Alexander von Harbin, who likewise loves Marina, shows up, but she sends him away.  Back at his estate, he witnesses horrible devestation ordered by Georg von Harbin, a Red Army Commissar.  A fight breaks out between the two of them and when Georg is killed in a subsequent auto accident, Alexander takes his papers.  Passing as Georg von Harbin, Alexander goes to the theatre, but there’s chaos going on there, too:  the revolutionaries have taken over power.  Marina and the entire ensemble are to be shot at any moment, when Alexander claims to be her lover and saves her.  But the ruse is discovered. 

Am Vorabend der russischen Revolution findet in der Oper die Aufführung von "Tosca" statt. Die Hauptrollen spielen Marina Marta und René Areno, die sich lieben. In der Pause erscheint Alexander von Harbin, der Marina ebenfalls liebt, doch sie weist ihn ab. Zurück auf seinem Gut steht er vor einer entsetzlichen Verwüstung, die Georg von Harbin, Kommissar der Roten Armee, angeordnet hat. Zwischen den beiden kommt es zu einer Auseinandersetzung, und bei der anschließenden Autofahrt verunglückt Georg tödlich, Alexander nimmt seine Papiere an sich. Als Georg von Harbin trifft Alexander im Theater ein, aber auch hier herrscht das Chaos, die Aufständischen haben die Macht übernommen. Marina und das ganze Ensemble sollen gerade erschossen werden, als Alexander sie als seine Geliebte ausgibt und sie retten kann. Doch die List wird entdeckt.
