Berlin im Sommer 1939. Auf einem Hinterhof entdecken Kinder beim Spielen einen Mann, der sich in einem verlassenen Keller versteckt hält. Es ist ein politischer Häftling, ein Illegaler, der dank der Hilfe von Genossen fliehen konnte. Der 15-jährige Rainer Meister, den alle nur Amigo nennen, weiß was das ist, ein Illegaler - sein Vater ist selbst einer, den die Gestapo schon einmal geholt hatte. Ohne zu zögern hilft Amigo dem Fremden, der sich ihm als Pepp vorstellt, bringt ihm Essen und Kleidung, alles heimlich. Sine, dem Nachbarsjungen, der mit dabei war, als sie Pepp fanden, erzählt Amigo Geschichten, damit er dicht hält. Doch Sine erfährt schließlich beim Lauschen die Wahrheit und macht seinen führertreuen Vater durch eine harmlose Frage aufmerksam und wütend.

Berlin in the Summer of 1939:  In the courtyard of an apartment house, playing children discover a man hiding in an abandoned cellar.  He’s a political prisoner, an illegal, who was able to escape from prison with the help of comrades.  15 year old Rainer Meister, who’s called “Amigo” by everyone, knows all too well what an “illegal” is:  his father is one and he’s already been picked up by the Gestapo.  Without hesitation, Amigo helps the strange man, who introduces himself as Pepp.  Amigo secretly brings him food and clothing.  Sine, a neighborhood boy, who was there when Amigo found Pepp, is told a made-up story by Amigo to ensure he keeps his mouth shut.  But Sine’s finally able to find out the truth by eavesdropping and manages to make his father, who is loyal to the Fuhrer, very angry and observant after the boy poses seemingly innocent questions.
