After defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, famine and riots break out in Paris.  The wife of Lui Ru, a carpenter, can no longer stand poverty and leaves her son and husband to marry a butcher in Versailles.  Lui dies on the barricades.  His comrades are executed.  Lui’s son is among the ones to be executed for rebelling against the government.  The executing officer entertains himself during the operation in a rather gruesome way.
