Der Film handelt vom Widerstand der Arbeiter gegen den Faschismus, angeregt durch die Verhaftung des Kommunistenführers Dimitrow. Zwei Handlungsstränge werden im Film parallel gezeigt; einerseits der Prozess gegen Dimitrow, der beschuldigt wird, den Reichstagsbrand (1933) initiiert zu haben, und andererseits der Widerstand der Arbeiter gegen die Faschisten von SA und SS. Die Arbeiter werden von der SA beschuldigt, die Spörke-Fabrik in Brand gesetzt zu haben. An der Spitze der Widerstandsbewegung stehen Mutter Lemke und Anna, die Dimitrow zu ihrer Leitfigur im Kampf gegen den Faschismus gemacht haben. Auslöser für Mutter Lemkes Widerstand ist der Tod ihres Sohnes Hans, der von der SA ermordet wurde, da er wusste, dass in der Spörkefabrik Giftgas – als Kriegswaffe – hergestellt wurde und kein Parfüm.  Nach und nach findet Dimitrow in der ganzen Welt Anhänger, die für seine Freilassung demonstrieren. Und auch der Widerstandsbewegung um Mutter Lemke und Anna schließen sich ihr Sohn Fritz, ein Arzt und sogar ehemalige SA-Mitglieder an.  Die Befreiung Dimitrows am Ende des Films schürt auch gleichzeitig Hoffnungen auf das baldige Ende des Faschismus.  

Created by German exiles living in the Soviet Union, this film deals with the resistance of the working class against Fascism, prompted by the arrest of the Communist leader, Dimitrov.  Two plots are shown in a parallel fashion in the film:  on the one side is the trial against Dimitrov, who is accused of setting the Reichstag on fire  (1933).  On the other side is the workers’ resistance to the terror of the SA and SS.  The workers are being accused of setting fire to the Sporke Factory by the SA.  At the head of the resistance movement is Mother Lemke and Anna, who have made Dimitrov the leading figure in their fight against Fascism.  The trigger for Mother Lemke’s resistance is the death of her son Hans, who was murdered by the SA, because he knew that poison gas was being made in the Sporke Factory and not perfume.  Gradually, Dimitrov finds supporters throughout the world, who demonstrate for his freedom.  Mother Lemke’s resistance movement eventually includes her son Fritz, who is a doctor and former SA man.  Dimitrov’s release at the film’s end reflects the hope that Fascism will soon find its end.
