Die Schlossherrin Erika wird von den Dorfbewohnern „Madame Blaubart“ genannt, weil sie bereits zweimal verwitwet ist. Die Mörder ihrer beiden Ehemänner sind Verbrecher, die sie in der Hand haben. Sie verliebt sich in Helmuth, einen Bekannten ihrer Freundin Karla, und bittet einen ihrer Erpresser, den ersten Mann, den sie wirklich liebt, zu verschonen. Nach mehreren vergeblichen Mordanschlägen ahnt Helmuth die Zusammenhänge und gibt Erika die Schuld.  

The chatelaine Erika is known to the villagers as “Madame Bluebeard”, because she’s been widowed twice already.  The murderers of both her husbands are criminals, with whom she has had business.  She’s in love with Helmut, an acquaintance of her friend Karla, and begs one of her blackmailers, the spare Crook Number One, who she really loves.  After several failed assassination attempts, Helmut suspect the connection between Erika and her accomplices and lays the blame for the criminal acts on Erika.
