Mathias Bruckner, ehemals Bauer vom Brucknerhof, kommt nach einem Zuchthausaufenthalt wieder nach Hause. Er stößt jedoch nur auf Ablehnung, dies geht soweit, dass er sogar von der Kirche hinausgejagt wird. Seine Tochter Lena will ebenfalls nichts vom ihm wissen, einzig der amerikanische Besatzungssoldat Josua Washington Stone hilft ihm. Unterdessen versucht Mathias Schwägerin Franziska Donath weiter die Dorfbewohner gegen ihn aufzuhetzen, was ihr aber nur mäßig gelingt, da amerikanische Soldaten Mathias bei der Arbeit auf dem Feld helfen. Durch diese Hilfeleistung gelingt es Mathias die gesamte Ernte einzufahren, und Franziska steht plötzlich alleine da.

Mathias Bruckner – who bears an uncanny resemblance to Heinrich George, who by this time had starved to death in the Soviet Special Camp at Sachsenhausen – formerly a farmer from Brucknerhof, returns home after doing a bit of time in prison.  Unfortunately, his homecoming is anything but happy, to the point even, that he’s chased out of the local church.  His daughter Lena likewise wants nothing to do with him.  Only a black American in the occupation army, Josua Washington, is willing to help him.  In the meantime, Mathias’ sister-in-law, Franziska Donath, continues to incite the locals against him, which only moderately succeeds, as the American soldier is helping them out in the fields.  And it is thanks to this help, that Mathias is able to bring in the entire harvest; which leaves Franziska suddenly alone in her plotting.
