Der Jäger Jakob Sonnleitner liebt die Landschaft und die Natur seines Reviers. Eines Abends stellt er einen Wilderer, der beim Fluchtversuch tödlich verunglückt: Es ist der Sohn des im Dorf einflußreichen Bauern Hochegger. Dem Bauern gelingt es, die Abberufung Sonnleitners zu erzwingen, obwohl kein Zweifel daran besteht, dass der alte Jäger unschuldig ist. Sonnleitner wird in ein Revier am Neusiedler See versetzt. Bis zum Eintreffen des neuen Jägers pflegt seine Tochter Evi das alte Revier. Der neue Jäger Konrad Prandtner merkt erst, dass er ein Protektionskind des Bauern ist, als Hochegger von ihm verlangt, einen privaten Gläubiger im Revier einen Hirsch schießen zu lassen. Doch der Jäger lässt sich nicht auf den Handel ein – er ist sogar fest entschlossen, Hochegger zu entlarven.

The hunter Jakob Sonnleitner loves the landscapes and nature of his district.  One evening, he runs into a poacher, who is fatally wounded during his attempt to get away.  It turns out, he’s the son of the most influential farmer in the village, Hochegger.  The farmer is successful in having Sonnleitner banished, although there’s no doubt, that the old hunter is innocent.  Sonnleitner is transferred to a district on the Neusiedler See.  Until the new hunter arrives, his daughter Evi watches over the old district.  The new hunter, Konrad Prandtner, notices immediately, that the farmers are out to make him their protégé, when Hochegger demands from him, that he let a credit from outside of the district to come in and shoot a deer.  However, the hunter takes no part in this business – in fact, he’s decided to turn Hochegger in.
