In Lamprechts Adaption des berühmten Romans von Flaubert verkörpert Pola Negri die Titelrolle. Emma Bovary ist die Frau eines Arztes, der sich in der Kleinstadt Yonville niederlässt und dort mit den Ressentiments der Bewohner zu kämpfen hat. Emma wird von dem Anwalt Dupuis umgarnt, der Yonville jedoch bald verlässt. Sie will nun selbst den Beschränkungen des kleinen Ortes und ihrer Ehe entkommen und lässt sich mit dem Verführer Rodolphe Boulanger ein. Ihr Freiheitsdrang äußert sich auch im Kauf teurer Kleider, bis ihr das Geld ausgeht

Pola Negri plays the title role in Lamprecht's adaptation of the famous novel by Flaubert. Emma Bovary is the wife of a doctor, who has settled in the small city of Yonville and has to contend with the resentments of the local population. Emma is ensnared by the lawyer Dupuis, who soon leaves Yonville. She herself wants to escape the limitations of the small town and the difficulties in her marriage and gets involved with the seducer Rodolphe Boulanger. Her need for freedom also expresses itself in her purchase of expensive clothes until her money runs out
