Laurent Bertal is married to a successful prosecutor in Bern, Switzerland. However, she'd be perfectly happy if her husband didn't neglect her so often for his work. While staying with her friend Elena on the shores of Lake Como, Evelyne meets Remy Marsay, a fickle and playful young man, who seduces her. After a brief flirtation, he leaves for Paris and she Bern, feeling an irresistible draw to this man. Her husband Laurent suspects something is up and questions Elena, who only mentions a simple and harmless flirt. However, the marriage starts to show signs of tension. In the meantime, Remy has found his mistress of the moment, Marion, to whom he tells all of his adventures with the ladies. She, in turn, pushed him to ask Evelyne to join him in Paris, because she's sure it'll only be an ephemeral adventure. At first reluctant, Evelyne comes to Paris, while Laurent believes she's in the countryside at Elena's. Once she arrives in Paris, she realizes her audacity and thinks she should go back; but after spending a wonderful day touring the city with Remy, she becomes his mistress and for her, it's another, second life. Remy suddenly understands that he's in love with her and asks her to leave Laurent. 

Bien mariée à Laurent Bertal, procureur à Berne, Evelyne serait parfaitement heureuse si son époux n’avait pas tendance à la délaisser pour son travail. Au cours d'un séjour en Italie au bord du lac de Côme, avec son amie Elena, Evelyne rencontre Rémy Marsay , un jeune homme volage et joueur qui la séduit malgré elle. Après un bref flirt, il entre à Paris, et elle à Berne, se sentant irrésistiblement par cet homme. Son mari Laurent se doutant de quelque chose, interroge Elena qui n’évoque qu’un simple flirt anodin. Cependant la tension s’installe dans le couple. De son côté, Rémy a retrouvé sa maîtresse en titre, Marion , à laquelle il a l’habitude de raconter toutes ses aventures féminines. Elle le pousse à demander à Evelyne de le rejoindre à Paris, car elle est sûre que ce ne sera qu’une aventure éphémère. D’abord réticente, Evelyne finit par arriver à Paris, alors que Laurent la croit à la campagne, chez Elena, Néanmoins, arrivée dans la capitale, elle prend conscience de son audace et pense faire demi-tour. Mais après avoir passé une journée de rêve sentimental à visiter Paris avec Rémy, elle devient sa maîtresse et pour elle c’est une autre vie …. Rémy comprend soudain qu'il est amoureux d'elle et lui demande de quitter Laurent.
