1922. Kira, the daughter of a merchant now left impoverished after the Russian Revolution, moves from the Caucasus to Petersburg to study Engineering. She's put up by the Dunalev family, whose son Victor grows infatuated with her. He pleads with her to abandon her anti-Bolshevik opinions. Kira, however, meets another young man, mysterious and unknown to all. The two fall in love and are promptly denounced by Syarov, a fanatic. Kira's arrested, but the young man --- the son of a cricket admirer shot by the revolutionaries --- manages to escape. At "trial", Kira's defended by Andrei, a political commissar, who falls in love with her and works to get her released. Syerov, not content with having gotten Kira arrested, is against the girl going free and is suspicious of the whole affair between the her and the commissar. Kira is eventually set free and meets up with her former lover. The two decide to escape abroad, convinced neither has a future in the Soviet Union. Their boat, however, is intercepted and sunk. They manage to save themselves, but Leo loses his spirit and needs to spend time in a sanatorium in Crimea to regain his health. To get these treatments, Kira will turn to Andrei and prostitute herself to help her sick paramour.

Nel 1922, la giovane Kira, figlia di commercianti impoveriti dalla Rivoluzione, si trasferisce dal Caucaso a Pietroburgo per studiare Ingegneria. Viene ospitata dalla famiglia Dunaiev, il cui figlio Victor, è attratto da lei e la implora di attenuare la sua posizioni anti bolsceviche. Kira, però, incontra un giovane misterioso e sconosciuto ed è di lui che la ragazza si innamora. Denunciati da Sjerov, giovane studente fanatico, Kira viene arrestata, mentre Leo, che è in realtà il figlio di un Ammiraglio zarista fucilato dai rivoluzionari, riesce a fuggire. Durante l'arresto, Kira viene difesa da Andrej, commissario politico, che si innamora di lei e si adopera per ottenere la sua liberazione, nonostante l'opposizione di Sjerov ed i sospetti che con tale comportamento attira su di sé. Kira, liberata, riallaccia i rapporti con Leo, ed i due giovani decidono di fuggire via mare all'estero, ormai persuasi di non avere un futuro nel proprio Paese. Il tentativo però non riesce perché la loro imbarcazione viene intercettata ed affondata. Loro riescono a salvarsi, ma nella disavventura Leo si ammala di tisi ed ha necessità di essere inviato in un sanatorio in Crimea. Per ottenere queste cure Kira ricorre all'intervento di Andrej e si rassegna a diventarne l'amante.
