Sedemondo succeeds his brother Licinio as king of Kindaor after having the former murdered by an arrow in the back.   Soon thereafter, a messenger bearing a crown made with a nail from the true cross requests permission to cross the kingdom. The crown, by legend, will stay wherever injustice and corruption prevail. Sedemondo takes it to a gorge where it is swallowed by the earth. A wise, old woman prophesizes to the king that his wife will bear a daughter and Licinio's widow a son; that the two will fall in love; and that the son will take the kingdom away from Sedemondo. When he gets home, he is told that his wife has given birth to a boy (the daughter having been switched with the child of Licinio) and so believes the prophesy to be invalid. He raises both the boy Arminio and the girl Elsa. Twenty years later, a tournament is arranged to marry off the king's daughter and, unbeknownst to Sedemondo, the champion is going to be the very man, who'll fulfill the prophesy. 

The film was a not-so-subtle commentary on the rule of Mussolini and the fascists, who controlled Italy at the time.  It contrasted the current government's ruling of the country with violence, deceit and oppression with the eventual coming of honor and peace.  Joseph Goebbels saw the film in Venice and wasn't at all impressed with it.  Unlike Mussolini's censors, he understood all too quickly the real message behind the film and exclaimed, "Had a German director made this film, I would've had him shot!"

La spedizione che trasporta la corona di ferro, forgiata con un chiodo della croce, inviata dall'imperatore di Bisanzio al papa in segno di pace, attraversa una terra dove si è appena conclusa una lunga e gravosa guerra. Il vincitore, Licinio, è pronto ad offrire allo sconfitto Artace una pace onorevole, ma il fratello Sedemondo lo fa uccidere alle spalle con una freccia, usurpandone il trono di Kindaor e condannando il nemico all'esilio e il suo popolo alla schiavitù. Tenta poi di impadronirsi della corona di ferro, facendo sterminare la scorta dall'infallibile arciere Farkas, alle gole di Natersa, ma la preziosa reliquia si sottrae alle mire del nuovo sovrano, sprofondando miracolosamente nella terra. Il re Sedemondo  e la figlia Elsa.  Una misteriosa vecchia, che vive nella foresta, profetizza a Sedemondo che il suo comportamento sacrilego non rimarrà impunito: al fratricida nascerà una femmina, all'ucciso un maschio, e i due si ameranno tragicamente. In effetti, a Kindaor, la moglie di Sedemondo ha partorito una femmina, Elsa, e la vedova di Licinio un maschio, Arminio, ma i neonati vengono opportunamente scambiati per salvare loro la vita. I due bambini vengono cresciuti come fratello e sorella, finché Sedemondo non intuisce l'inganno e allontana Arminio facendolo portare nell'isolata valle dei leoni, ma la vecchia gli cancella il ricordo di quale sia stata la sorte del bambino, quindi il re è costretto a segregare Elsa nella reggia, protetta da tre ordini di cancelli.  Vent'anni dopo, Sedemondo bandisce un torneo, il cui vincitore potrà sposare Elsa. Nel frattempo, una frana apre un varco fra i monti che circondano la valle dei leoni e Arminio può uscire all'esterno, inseguendo un cervo. Durante la caccia incontra Tundra, figlia di Artace, di cui si innamora subito, che gli propone di combattere nel torneo, per aiutarla a conquistare la libertà del suo popolo.
