Figaro, the valet of Count Almaviva, wantys to marry Susanna, the countess' maid. But some people aren't thrilled with the idea. For one thing, the count wants to make her his lover. And Marcellina, who has already gotten a promise of marriage from Figaro, and the page Cherubin are affected by this, because the count has discovered his relationship with the countess and other women. When the count surprises him at Susanna's place, the marriage is temporarily postponed. Now Figaro and Susanna ally themselves with the neglected countess. Cherubin is to dress up like Susanna and meet the count on a date and the countess is to surprise him during the rendezvous.

Figaro, Kammerdiener des Grafen Almaviva, will Susanna, die Kammerzofe der Gräfin, heiraten. Doch einigen Personen gefällt das nicht. Der Graf möchte sie zu seiner Geliebten machen. Auch Marcellina, die bereits ein Eheversprechen von Figaro hat, und der Page Cherubin sind betroffen, denn der Graf hat seine Beziehung zur Gräfin und anderen Frauen entdeckt. Als er ihn dann auch noch bei Susanna überrascht, wird die Hochzeit erst einmal verschoben. Nun verbünden sich Susanna und Figaro mit der vernachlässigten Gräfin. Cherubin soll als Susanna verkleidet dem Grafen ein Rendezvous gewähren, und die Gräfin soll sie dabei überraschen.
