Der russische Großfürst Michael lebt gegen den Willen des Zaren mit Alexandra in morganatischer Ehe. Seiner Liebe zu ihr opfert er Titel, Orden und Ehren. Auf der Flucht nach Wien wird Michael verwundet und gilt als verschollen. In Wien lernt Alexandra den Kapellmeister Martin Werner kennen, der ihr zu einer Karriere als Opernsängerin verhilft. Sie beginnt bereits, ihn zu lieben, als der totgeglaubte Michael wieder auftaucht.

The Russian Grand Duke Michael lives with Alexandra in a morganatic marriage very much against the will of the Czar.  In his love for her, he sacrifices his title, his medals and his honor.  Fleeing to Vienna, Michael is wounded and considered missing.  In Vienna, Alexandra gets to know the conductor Martin Werner, who helps her on her way to a career as an opera singer.  She starts to fall in love with him, when Michael, believed dead, suddenly reappears.
