Anstatt eine Arreststrafe anzutreten, begleitet Dr. Falke seinen Freund Eisenstein zum Ball des Prinzen Orlofsky. Hier trifft er nicht nur eine interessante junge Künstlerin, in der er schon bald sein Stubenmädchen Adele erkennt, den Gefängnisdirektor im Inkognito eines Chevalier Chagrin, sondern auch eine unbekannte maskierte Schönheit: Eisensteins Frau Rosalinde, die der Treue ihres Gatten recht misstrauisch gegenüber steht. Es wird nach Herzenslust betrogen und gelogen, bis mit dem nächsten Morgen die bittere Realität anbricht – und sich doch schließlich alles nur als ein von Dr. Falke inszeniertes Spiel entpuppt, um sich für eine vergangene Blamage zu rächen. 

Instead of going off to complete an eight-day prison sentence for insulting a policeman, Eisenstein is invited by his friend Dr. Falke to a ball being given by Prince Orlovsky.  While there, Eisenstein not only meets an interesting young artiste -- whom he soon recognizes as his housemaid, Adele -- but the prison warden passing himself off as a certain Chevalier Chagrin, as well as an unknown, masked beauty.   But while Eisenstein is able to recognize his maid, attending the party in his wife's best dress, he is unable to realize that the masked beauty is, indeed, his wife, who is becoming quite suspicious of her husband's loyalty as the night wears on.  Everyone is wining and dining, lying and betraying to their hearts' delight ... that is, until the following morning, when the bitter reality shows its face:  all of this has been staged by Dr. Falke as a means of avenging a past injustice.
