Ein Liebesdrama zweier Brüder um ein obdachloses Mädchen, das Arbeit und Unterkunft im Haus der Brüder findet. Während der Jüngere, Michael, zum Militär einberufen wird, feiert der Ältere, Peter, mit Jana Hochzeit. Sie bekommt ein Kind, das aber ebenso gut von Michael stammen könnte, da dieser vorher ein Verhältnis mit Jana hatte. Als Peter von seinem Bruder diesbezüglich verhöhnt wird, flieht Jana mit ihrem Kind vom Hof. Ein stummer Knecht, der von Anfang an das falsche Spiel Michaels miterlebt hat, schießt auf diesen. Im Sterben gesteht er Peter seine Lügen, der Jana nacheilt und sie zurück nach Hause holt. 

A romance-drama concerning two brothers’ affections for a homeless girl, who finds work and lodging in the brothers’ house.  While the younger brother, Michael, is called up for military service, the older brother, Peter, ends up marrying Jana.  Jana gives birth to a child, which could easily be Michael’s as well as Peter’s, since Jana was sexually involved with both men.  When Peter is mocked by his brother about this, Jana flees the farm with her child.  A mute servant, who has watched Michael’s misdeeds from the start, shoots Michael.  Dying, Michael admits his lies to Peter, who hurries after Jana and brings her back home.
