Der Scheich des Stammes der Haddedihn, Hadschi Halef Omar, und Kara Ben Nemsi kommen hinter die Machenschaften eines ehrenwert erscheinenden Beamten, des Säfirs, der in Wahrheit seinen Reichtum der Schmuggelei mit Waffen verdankt. In seinem Palast am Euphrat wohnen auch die achtzehnjährige Säfa und deren zwanzigjährigen Bruder Ikbal. Säfa hält den Säfir für ihren Vater, ist jedoch in Wahrheit die Tochter des Polizeihauptmanns Dosorza und Ikbal ist auch dessen Sohn. Ihre Mutter wurde vor 20 Jahren von den Schmugglern getötet und die Kinder entführt. Dosorza hält sie für tot. Ikbal hat sich in die Kaufmannstochter Irida verliebt, die ihn davon abhält, für den Säfir eine Karawane zu überfallen. Aus Wut lässt der Säfir beide in ein Verlies werfen, in dem auch schon der deutsche Professor Ignaz Pfotenhauer und der exzentrische englische Weltreisende Sir David Lindsay schmachten.

The sheikh of the Haddedihn tribe, Hadschi Halef Omar and Kara ben Nemsi do battle with the machinations of an apparently honorable official (Sefir), whose wealth, in reality, is due to a lucrative smuggling trade in weapons.  18 year old Safa and her 20 year old brother Ikbal live in the man’s palace on the Euphrates.  Safa believes Sefir is her father; in reality, she’s the daughter of the police chief Dosorza and Ikbal is likewise his son.  Their mother was killed by the smugglers 20 years earlier and the children were kidnapped.  Dosorza believes them dead.  Ikbal has fallen in love with the merchant’s daughter Irida, who keeps him from attacking a caravan on behalf of Sefir.  Enraged, Sefir throws them both in a dungeon where the German professor Ignacy Pfotenhauer and the eccentric English world traveler Sir David Lindsay are languishing.
