Für Johann August Suter ist Amerika das gelobte Land. Zu Hause in Deutschland wurde er von Schuldnern gejagt, musste fliehen, Frau und Kinder zurücklassen. In Amerika findet er sein Glück. Man schreibt die 30er Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts, das Land ist noch lange nicht vollends erschlossen. In der Gegend, die später einmal Kalifornien heißen wird, ergattert Suter nach einer beschwerlichen und abenteuerlichen Reise ein Stück Land. Mit der Kraft des Idealisten gelingt ihm das zunächst aussichtslose Vorhaben: Mitten in der Einöde schafft er ein gigantisches Reich. Eine Farm nach der anderen wird unter seiner Führung gebaut, und schon bald nennt man ihn ehrfürchtig den "Kaiser von Kalifornien". Nun ist es an der Zeit, Frau und Kinder nach Amerika zu holen, lange genug haben sie auf Nachricht von ihm gewartet. Aber kaum sind sie glücklich bei Suter angekommen, bricht das Unheil über die Familie herein. Auf Suters Land wird Gold gefunden – zahllose Goldgräber fallen nun über sein Reich her wie die Heuschrecken. Die Felder werden zerstört, die Herden niedergemetzelt. Doch Suter gibt nicht auf. Vor Gericht will er sein Recht auf Ersatz erstreiten, wenn es sein muss, durch alle Instanzen.

For Johann August Suter, America is the promised land. At home, in Germany, he was being chased by debtors and so had to leave, abandoning his wife and children. In America, he finds happiness. It's the 1830s and the country is still far from fully developed. In the area that will be named 'California' later on, Suter snatchs up a piece of land after an arduous and adventurous journey. With the power of idealism, he succeeds in bringing about what seemed unpromising: In the middle of nowhere he creates a gigantic empire. One farm after another is being built under his leadership and soon they call him the awesome "Emperor of California." Now's the time for finally send for his wife and children, who've been waiting a long time for news from him. But once they safely arrive, disaster strikes the family: Gold is found on Suter's land and countless prospectors fall on his kingdom like so many locusts. The fields are destroyed; the herds massacred. But Suter doesn't surrender to fate: he will fight for his rights in court, no matter what happens.

luis tranker made the first 'spagnetti western.... not sergio leone..... this film is truly one of trenkers finest.... you wll swear that you are out in the wild west.... i guess it was probably shot in spain vs.. california... the cinematography .. espcially the outdoor scenes...is truly a beauful visual experience .... the sets take you back to when this alll took place (the start of the gold rush when gold is found at sutters mill back in the 1880s...seeing luis trenker as a 'cowboy' made me curious enough to buy this film..... he pulls it off .... great acting/directing, etc.
