Жила-была хорошая добрая девушка Настенька. Злая мачеха заставляла ее работать, не давая продыху. Однажды она решила избавиться от падчерицы и отправила ту замерзать в зимний лес. В этих же краях жил паренек Иван. Он полюбил Настеньку, да вот только был он большим хвастуном, потому лесной колдун и превратил его в медведя. И Настеньке, и Ивану пришлось пройти через много испытаний, прежде чем соединить свои судьбы. И помог им в этом добрый волшебник - дедушка Морозко ...

Es waren einmal vor langer, langer Zeit ein alter Mann und eine böse, alte Frau. Die hatten zwei Töchter..." Die eine, Nastjenka, ist fleißig und wunderschön und die Tochter des Alten. Die andere, Marfuschka, ist faul und hässlich und die Tochter der bösen Alten. Nastjenka leidet sehr unter der Stiefmutter, die nur Augen für ihre eigene Tochter hat. Eines Tages begegnet Nastja im Wald dem jungen, eitlen Pralhans Iwan, der sich Hals über Kopf in sie verliebt. Als Iwan aus lauter Hochmut eine Bärenmutter töten will, verwandelt ihn eine Waldmännlein vor den Augen des Mädchens selbst in einen Bären. Erst mit dem Erfüllen einer guten Tt bekommt er seine menschliche Gestalt wieder zurück. Sofort begibt sich der Jüngling auf die gefährliche Suche nach seiner Liebsten. Doch Nastjenka wurde inzwischen von der bösen Stiefmutter verstoßen, das sämtliche Freier nur um die Hand Nastjas anhielten, anstatt ihrer Tochter Marfuschka den Hof zu machen. Allein und verzweifelt trifft Nastjenka schließlich im tiefverschneiten Wald auf Morosko - Väterchen Frost ...

From the people who hatched such historical and cultural oddities as Communism, Nesting Dolls and last, but certainly not least, Vladimir Putin (the Josef Stalin of the 21st Century and admirer of Donald Trump's politcal savoir faire), comes the story of Father Frost, who, like Socialism, shows up way too late in the story to be of much use to anyone.  Rather, the fairy tale actually centers around a boy and girl who endure the strangest situations just to be with one another.  The boy meets a Mushroom Pixie, who turns our lad into a bear and if that weren't enough, later meets up with an evil witch who controls trees a la Wizard of Oz and doesn't like our hero simply ... because.  Then there's the object of boy-turn-bear:  a girl given the Cinderella treatment by her mother and whose sister is jealous of her long-braided hair.  If you find this just a tad to bizarre to believe, let me assure you that I don't do drugs and didn't imagine all of this (though I suspect dropping acid or smoking a joint while watching this might make the surreal seem all too logical).  Strange as the tale may be, the pageantry, colors and simple enjoyment make the film a must-see.
