Frühe Verfilmung des Lebens der populären österreichischen Kaiserin "Sissi". Von ihrem Volk geliebt und verehrt, macht Sissis strenge Stiefmutter, die Erzherzogin Sophie, der jungen Herrscherin das Leben schwer. Die alte Dame legt großen Wert auf die höfische Etikette – Formalitäten, die von der lebenslustigen Kaiserin nur zu gerne missachtet werden. Als Sophie so weit geht, Sissi nach der Geburt von Thronfolger Rudolf die Erziehung des eigenen Kindes zu entziehen, droht die Situation zu eskalieren. Sissi, ihres Sohnes beraubt, wird schwer krank und erholt sich fern vom Wiener Hof. Jahre vergehen, Rudolf wächst zu einem stattlichen Mann heran und soll gegen seinen Willen verheiratet werden. Diesmal aber will Sissi nicht tatenlos zusehen.

An early film version about the life of the popular Austrian empress “Sissi”.  Loved and adored by her people, Sissi’s strict stepmother, Archduchess Sophie, makes life difficult for the young ruler.  The old lady places great worth on court etiquette – formalities, which the empress is only too happy to disregard.  When Sophie goes so far as to deprive Sissi of the right to educate her own child after the birth of the heir Rudolf, the situation threatens to get out of control.  Sissi, robbed of her son, becomes severely ill and leaves the royal court to recover far from Vienna.  Years pass and Rudolf grows into a handsome man and is to be married against his will.  But this time, Sissi has no intention of sitting back and doing nothing about it.
