While on a business trip to Europe, American millionaire George B. Stefenson suffers a heart attack due to all the stress. Dr. Hartung warns him, that he better take three months off to rest or he won't have to worry about anymore business trips in the future. Thus, the title of the film, "A Vacation from Myself". After some grumbling, Stefenson gives in and also approves the financing of a project which, up to now, has only been an idea in the doctor's head. To ensure the patient is left undisturbed, he's given a new name and set of clothes, so no one will be able to recognize who he really is. So disguised, Stefenson acquires Castle Dornberg, along with Eva von Dornberg, who runs the place, while Dr. Hatrung takes over the medical duties at the castle. What this all has to do with Stefenson resting is beyond me, as he takes an active part in running the place, too, and soon falls in love with Eva von Dornberg. Of course, with the exception of the doctor, no one, including Eva, knows who this new guy named "Walter" really is. Shortly before the happy ending, however, some mean plot leads to Stefanson thinking that Eva knows what's really going on. Disappointed that Eva probably would want nothing to do with him --- but everything to do with his money --- he decides to head back home. Fortunately, the cruel trick is revealed and Stefanson runs back to Eva to continue lying about whom he is.

Der amerikanische Milliardär George B. Stefenson bereist geschäftlich Europa, wobei er aufgrund seiner hohen beruflichen Belastung einen Herzanfall erleidet. Der herbeigerufene Arzt Dr. Hartung rät ihm dringend, ein Vierteljahr auszuspannen, also „Ferien vom Ich“ zu nehmen. Stefenson stimmt nach einigem Zögern zu und sagt auch die Finanzierung des Projektes zu, da eine solche Institution, die dieses bietet, bisher nur im Kopf des Arztes als Traum existiert. Im Rahmen der „Ferien vom Ich“ erhalten alle Teilnehmer einen neuen Vornamen und Arbeitskleidung, um keinem der anderen Mitbewohner ihre wahre Existenz preisgeben zu müssen. Aus diesem Grund erwirbt Stefenson das heruntergewirtschaftete Gut Schloss Dornberg von der jungen Eva von Dornberg, die weiterhin als wirtschaftliche Leiterin fungiert, während Dr. Hartung die ärztliche Leitung übernimmt. Stefenson selbst nimmt als Walter am Landleben teil und verliebt sich im Laufe der Zeit in Eva von Dornberg, die wie alle anderen Bewohner (mit Ausnahme des Arztes und des Kastellans) keine Ahnung hat, wer sich tatsächlich hinter Walter verbirgt. Kurz vor dem Happy End wird Stefenson durch eine gemeine Intrige zugetragen, dass Eva sehr wohl wisse, wer er in Wirklichkeit sei. Enttäuscht will er daraufhin Hals über Kopf abreisen. Durch einen glücklichen Zufall wird die Intrige jedoch aufgedeckt und Stefenson kehrt zu Eva zurück.
