Von reichen Leuten kann man lernen, wie man spart – diese Weisheit trifft auch auf Wilhelm Steputat zu, einen Unternehmer, der ebenso erfolgreich wie geizig ist. Es gibt niemanden, der das Ekel Steputat leiden kann, schon gar nicht seine Angestellten. Als Steputat eines Tages von einer gemeinnützigen Organisation sechs Lose geschickt bekommt, die für seine Angestellten bestimmt waren, beauftragt er seinen Arbeiter Ernst, sie zurückzuschicken, da er zu knauserig ist, sie zu bezahlen. Durch eine Verkettung unglücklicher Zufälle vergisst Ernst jedoch, den Brief bei der Post aufzugeben. Erst zu Hause bemerkt er den Umschlag in seiner Tasche. Aus Angst vor Steputats Zorn will Ernst die Lose aus eigener Tasche bezahlen, da die Frist zum Zurückschicken bereits verstrichen ist. Da er aber kein Geld hat, will er sich die nötigen zwölf Mark von der kessen Minna leihen, Steputats neuer Wirtschafterin – doch die verlangt als Gegenleistung körperliche Zuwendung. Darauf hat Ernst keine Lust, zumal er schon lange in die junge Hertha verliebt ist; also bittet er Steputats Bürovorsteher um einen Vorschuss.

People can learn how to save money by watching the rich --- that little jewel applies to Wilhelm Steputat, too.  He’s an entrepreneur, who’s as successful as he is stingy.  There is positively no one, who can stand this disgusting man; certainly not his employees.  When Steputat receives six lottery tickets from a non-profit organization intended for his employees, he tells his worker Ernst to send them back, because he’s too cheap to pay for them.  Through a chain of unfortunate coincidences, Ernst forgets to drop off the letter at the post office.  Only when he arrives back home does he see the envelope in his coat pocket.  Fearful of Steputat’s anger, Ernst intends to pay for the tickets out of his own pocket, since the deadline to return the tickets has now passed.  But since he has no money, he wants to borrow the necessary 12 Marks from Minna, Steputat’s cheeky new housekeeper.  But in return for the money, she asks him to prostitute himself.  Ernst, however, isn’t interested in the slightest, since he’s been in love with the young Hertha for the longest time.  So, instead, he asks  Steputat’s office manager for an advance.
